Popular US novelist Toni Morrison dies at age 88

Her notable achievements won homage from celebrities, politicians, and readers around the globe, and also gave her a strong view on issues of black identity, racial equality, and freedom in the US.

She was part of those that endorsed Barack Obama, in his bid to become the first black president.

Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 saying in his speech that her prose “brings us the kind of moral and emotional intensity that few writers ever attempt”.

Obama has already bid her farewell on twitter, he typed:

“Toni Morrison was a national treasure, as good a storyteller, as captivating, in person as she was on the page. Her writing was a beautiful, meaningful challenge to our conscience and our moral imagination. What a gift to breathe the same air as her, if only for a while.”
